Ike hammered his hand against the window of the car. It was raining outside and still cold. New York was still gleaming though. It beat Tulsa and Kayla though. It was all so tough having Taylor and Zac talk about her and Keryn ever moment. It was so hard not to pick up the phone and call her and just say "hey" but he knew that she would freak out if he did. She wanted her independence, her space and this was exactly what he was giving her. He just hoped that she would realise that she missed him like mad.
Taylor stared at Ike, he was thinking about her again. Geez, this really was tearing him up. Unbelievable. Ike was known as the family lovebird but still, this was getting out of hand. Kayla should have realised what she was doing when she did this, I mean she knows him so well. Taylor guessed that his possessiveness went from comforting to stifling. He couldn't blame her. Well life was pretty much good, the album was out in Australia and peopled loved it, it was about to hit the shelves in the states and they were excited. Keryn was back home holding down the fort and things seemed to be going well. Life just seemed easy. Interviewers asked them what events had happened between "Middle of Nowhere" and "This Time Around" and Taylor just didn't know where to start.
Kayla threw open the door, flung her keys across the floor
stuck her foot out to hold the door open, hollered for
Keryn and then dragged herself and the shopping in. What a day.
Keryn came and picked up the rest of the bags and followed
her into the kitchen.
"I couldn't wait for you to get home, do you know how quiet
it is here?"
"Deathly." Said Kayla as she peeled off her jumper.
"Well yeah, in between manic calls from Margo wanting to
know if Zac Has called."
"He still hasn't called her?"
"Seems not... but I mean he hasn't called us either."
"True."
"So how did it go - what did they say?"
"Nothing much, still haven't heard".
"Is that good or bad?"
"Neither... they just haven't made up their minds yet."
"It's taking them a while.."
"Apparently that s normal."
The girls stacked a few shelves in silence..
"Ike called today." Keryn said.
"Really? What's up in the big apple."
"Nothing much, I think he was trying to catch you."
"Yeah, well lucky he didn't."
"Kayla, why are you making this so hard for him?"
"Because Keryn I don t want to make up, well at least not
now. He needs to get over me and he cant do that when I keep
popping up."
"A phone call isn't popping up".
"I know... but what would I have said?"
"So that s the real reason huh?"
"NO!"
"Mmmm well you would have said what you usually say to the
others."
"Yeah" replied Kayla sticking her head in the fridge.
"He asked if you and Charlie were talking."
"Of course we are!"
"Yeah, I told him that, he didn't seem to happy about
it."
"He needs to chill out."
"He loves you."
"If he does then he should know I need to have some time to
myself."
Keryn raised her eyebrows.
"Snap out of it Ike." Said Zac poking his brother in the
ribs. She wasn t home, Keryn will have told her, she knows
you care.
"Yeah I know."
"Ike we are on tour again, stop moping, this is what we ve
worked for."
"Yeah I know."
"Stop saying that!"
"Zac I just imagined that they would be here with us."
"What Keryn and Kayla? Ike they would never come. NEVER!
They don t want to be out here in this, they don t want to
tag along, they have their own lives.
"I guess".
"Call her, I cant stand it call her again, she should be
home by now."
Ike looked across Zac to Tay who just nodded in support.
"The phones ringing."
"I realise that Keryn."
"Can you get it.?"
Kayla looked at her friend who was half inside a cupboard
looking for chicken broth and walked into the hall to get
the walk about phone .
'He-lloo."
"Kayla?"
-pause-
"Ike?"
"Hi."
By now Keryn had removed herself from the cupboard and
wandered into the hall to be a spectator.
"Hi Ike, how are you?"
"Fine fine, the tours going well and we are having fun, all
like it used to be."
"Sounds good."
"Yeah it is, so, umm how's Charlie?"
"Well my friend Charlie is fine.
"Good to hear."
"You don t mean that."
"I know.."
Ike listened to the silence from the other end of the phone
and wondered how he could be so stupid.
"I miss you you know."
"I know you do."
"it's harder than I though it would be."
"It ll get better Ike, I promise."
"Is it Ok if I call?"
"Of course it is, we re friends remember."
"Good."
Call waiting begun to beep. They ignored it.
"Kayla you better get that."
"I know, I'll speak to you soon Ok Ike?"
"Okay... bye."
Kayla pushed the button.
"Hello."
"Well if it isn't the one and only perky Kayla."
"Hi Charlie, talk to Keryn."
Kayla handed the phone to Keryn and walked back into the
kitchen.
"Hi Charlie."
"Hi, what's wrong with Kayla?"
Keryn took a deep breath, "guess who just rang?"
