Here:Now

20-January-00

Sitting by the TV they eagerly waited for the commercials to begin.

"I cant believe I am waiting for friends to finish so I can watch the ads." Exclaimed Zac

Kayla shrugged and fiddled with her ring, she couldn’t decided whether to sit or stand. Hovering in the doorway she waited with Charlie for their faces to appear on the screen. Charlie looked equally spooked. It wasn’t every day that your face was there for the whole of the States to scrutinize. This was weird. The TV flashed and the ads appeared. They watched with baited breath.

Prancing around on the screen were small figures of Charlie and Kayla laughing and throwing margarine tubs around. “Not your ordinary stuff,” exclaimed a smiling Kayla. Charlie zoomed around in the background while Kayla proceeded to spread the margarine on her bread.

Everyone collapsed in laughter.

"It is soooo cool!" chanted Keryn as she hugged her girlfriend.

Ike and Taylor smiled as Zac zoomed around Charlie style.

Charlie was beaming, Kayla looked ecstatic. They had done it, it had begun. And both weren’t exactly sure where it would lead them, but so far they were enjoying it. The producer was right, they had looked natural on screen, it was such a shock to be there like Hanson. Taylor, Ike and Zac looked on in amusement as Kayla and Charlie received their first flush of seeing themselves in different light. They had forgotten the thrill they had received hearing themselves for the first time on the radio. But it was coming back fast now.

"I cant believe it!! That seems so weird, cause I am looking at the screen and I can remember what was going through my head as I was doing that! It was the weirdest feeling!" Kayla was flushed from the thrill.

The phone began to angrily buzz in the hall, none wanted to get it, the atmosphere in the living room was so high, to leave it could mean to lose it but Taylor finally slunk out to get it.

"Kayla!! For you!" came his scream.

She bounced out, leaving Charlie to take up the explanation of their claim to fame.

"Hello?"

"Hi Mikala? This is Andrew Cannon, I represent a talent agency."

"Pardon?" She was almost fainting.

"Yes, I have been in contact with the producer of your commercial and I have been lead to believe that that was your first appearance on TV."

"Yes, I have been studying."

"I have heard. But anyway, I was wondering if you would like to come for an interview for the agency."

Kayla’s heart sank, what about Charlie? Leaving Tulsa again? She still had six months left of school.

"Umm Mr Cannon, I am not really sure, How about Charlie?"

"He isn’t answering his phone at the moment but we will be in contact with him too."

"Oh! Mr Cannon..."

"Andrew."

"Andrew, Charlie is with me here, in Tulsa."

"I will speak to him after you then, but what is your decision?"

"This is rather rushed Mr Andrew. I mean, I have six months of school left, I don’t really want to have to fly to L.A again right now."

"Mikala, don’t worry. Filming for most things doesn’t start until the summer, you will just have readings to attend. At the most a few commercials, but you seem to be able to wrap them up quickly and we have representatives in Tulsa that can see you whenever you find the time."

"Oh, well can I think about it?"

"Sure just give me a ring back. Can I speak to Charlie?"

"Sure, hold on a second."

Kayla placed the phone on the table and called Charlie in. As he picked up the phone Taylor came and gave her a hug. The others looked on bewildered. Taylor, having answered the phone, knew exactly what was going on.

"What? TELL MEEEE!” screamed Zac as Ike and Keryn looked on expectantly.

"It is an agent from a talent agent, he wants to sign me and Charlie."

"Wow!" was the collective response.

"You don’t seem to perky-perky about it Kayla... whats up?" Asked Zac. "I don’t know, it is such a big thing and I have seen what’s happened to your lives, and I don’t know, like I would get that far anyways."

Charlie walked back in, shell shocked, but smiling.

"I’m going down now Kayla, want to come?"

"I don’t know."

"Andrew just mentioned that they have already received a few scripts for some new shows that might interest you."

Kayla’s eyes widened.

"It was only a margarine commercial Charlie... I am hardly the next Katie Holmes."

"You never know. Come on what do you have to lose?"

Kayla smiled “Nothing.”

"Bye then guys... I guess that I might as well."

Scooping themselves up the troop followed Kayla and Charlie outside and watched as they hurled themselves into Isaac’s jeep. Ike tossed the keys to Charlie gave Kayla kiss and shook Charlie’s hand. It was happening for them now. Watching them drive off, the Hanson brothers sighed.

"What?" asked Keryn.

"Just when all the stalking stops we get two new celebrity friends," replied Zac.

"Hardly celebs yet Zac," replied Keryn.

"It doesn’t take long." Was Taylor’s addition.

"And they both have talent, it was butter commercial and they have been offered an agent. They have to be good. You saw it yourself Keryn, they are, like, glowing on screen. So natural. Actually, it annoys me, we can spend a week shooting a video and look fake and then those two rock up to do a commercial wrap it in a day and get calls." Ike said.

Keryn raised her eyebrow.

"They have joined the family, they have got the buzz - they are going to love it... and hate it." Cried Zac.

The jeep rattled along and Charlie and Kayla talked a mile a minute about the emotions they were feeling. So fast, so scary. They were shocked. They had rocketed, it less than 2 weeks to being people with talent from losers that were scraping together money for coffee. They were all smiles and all excitement.

"I cant believe it. I cant believe it. I cant believe it." Repeated Kayla.

"Tell me about it."

"What do you think they’ll ask us? What happens if they don’t like us... oh my God - I forgot to brush my hair."

"You look fine. It’ll be fine, just be natural. Don’t fret."

"Don’t fret? Geez. That shows how well you know me... I cant help freaking fretting."

"Kayla, you are natural, chill, they like you, they have called you. You are practically signed."

Pulling into the parking lot, Charlie hauled a fretting Kayla into the building, lift and finally the office.

"Hi, This is Mikala."

"Yes, Mr Davis is expecting you, go straight through."

Charlie pushed Kayla past the secretary and into a sparse waiting room.

"Charlie, Mikala, you are here."

A short, fat man flung the door open and puffed away on a cigar. Kayla scrunched up her nose immediately.

"Welcome, come in... come in."

Following him into a office that was covered in newspaper cuttings and phone numbers the two sat, uncomfortably.

"Now, I have been called by Andrew, I have seen the commercial and we think that you two have something special."

Fumbling around in his draws he pulled out about four scripts and pushed them across the desk to Kayla.

"These are what you could be looking at if you agree to sign with us, you Charlie, have been offered this."

Charlie’s eyes opened wide as Mr Davis showed them a spread of the GAP ads.

"GAP, I’ve been offered GAP?"

"If you sign with us, yes."

"Give me a pen then!"

"Wait,” exclaimed Kayla, "I don’t understand, we have done one butter ad, and it has been on for a total of four hours, why is this so fast?"

"You are in the fast business girl. The commercials are seen by many before released to TV."

"Oh.."

"So are you in?"

Kayla looked at Charlie, who was beaming tentatively, she replied.

"Yes, I think so, why not?"

Two weeks later, everyone in the house had read Kayla’s scripts. Charlie was away being GAP boy and Kayla was facing choosing the one she wanted to do. A gathering in the lounge room was in order. With pizza and Pepsi, and Coke for Keryn, the deliberations started.

"Well it isn’t like you will definitely get it, it is just a reading... do them all." Was Zac’s input."

"I don’t know."

"Okay then," started Ike, "lets look at them, we have Crossways a sorta Felicity/Dawson’s Creek sorta saga. Been done before. We have Life that’s sorta self discovery thingo. Then Lay Down which is more comedy - Friends for teenagers... and I don’t like Here:Now, that’s too space age."

Kayla hummed and ha-ed.

"When do you need to decide?"

"By tonight."

They looked on again.

"I think I am going to go for everything except Here:Now. Do we have a video camera? Can someone read with me?"

The others smiled... it had started... and they hoped it wasn’t going to be too bumpy of a ride.
