The first thing Keryn heard when she woke up was Kayla. Not that it was a bad thing, or unusual for that matter as Kayla always seemed to wake everyone up as soon as she was awake. It was more what she was saying that caused Keryn to tune in quickly.
"Well I dunno, but it sure looks kinky"
Keryn could hear Kayla and Ike laughing, as quietly as possible.
"What? What’s so kinky?" Demanded Keryn while snapping her eyes open.
Keryn saw something in front of her. A big mass. A big blonde, furry, mass. She freaked out. She started to try and push it out of the bed but it was to heavy. She tried to scramble over the lump but she couldnt quite make it. By now Kayla and Ike were in hysterics and the lump, otherwise known as Taylor, started to stir.
"Keryn? Keryn? What the hell are you doing?????"
"Oh Taylor! Thank God!! I thought you were….."
"She was scrambling around trying to…"Kayla cut in
"..trying to push you out or get of the bed, it was sooo funny!"
Taylor didnt see the funny side and said;
"Since when do the two of you finish off each others sentences?"
That shut Ike and Kayla up. Fast.
"Fry it" said Zac in a defiant voice.
"What? Like McDonalds?" asked Kayla
"Yeah."
"No way..that stuff is foul!"
"Okay then what about….." Taylor too could find no solution that would make them all happy.
"Okay. Fine listen to the wonderful Keryn, as always I have managed to come up with a perfect answer. Okay, today Taylor and I are on lunch shift we will take turns, tomorrow someone else will go and whoevers shift it is chooses what everyone eats for lunch. Okay?"
There were a few grumbled from Zac but then he said he would do tomorrow and everything would be fried…so as Taylor and Keryn set about rumaging around the kitchen the others went into the lounge room. Zac quickly started playing video games and Ike and Kayla flopped on the couch and watched him play.
Ike was watching Zac play, well not really. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Kayla. She although was sitting quietly seemed like she was going to explode. It was obvious she was thinking about something that was stressing her out. He could resist it, he had to say something;
"Kayla? You okay?"
He watched her turn slowly to face him and her eyes focus on him.
"Oh, sorry Ike I’m okay, I think I….I think I need to make a phone call."
"The phones in the hall" said Ike happy that her problem could be solved by a simple phone call. But Kayla continued to stay rooted to the spot. Maybe it wasn’t such a simple phone call thought Ike
"Kayla? The phone?"
"Ike…."Kayla looked almost as if she was going to tell him something but then changed her mind and drew back. Zac, sensing the change of mood quietly left the room without the other two noticing.
"Kayla are you sure your okay?" asked Ike gently.
"I just need to phone somebody but…but I’m scared that what he’ll tell me is something I don’t want to hear."
Ike studied Kayla, this was this first he had heard of this..guy.
"Well…"Ike was lost for words.
Kayla looked over at Ike and just by her looking at him Ike suddenly understood that nothing he could say would make her feel better. She pulled herself off the couch with great effort and stood on the spot. After a great pause Ike said"I’m here, if you, well you know, need to talk or anything"
Kayla once again looked at him and smiled, softly.
"I know"
She walked towards the hall. She could feel her heard beating. It must have been five minutes that she stared at the phone before picking it up to dial. This one phone call meant many things. It decided her future and whatever the outcome of this single phone call was, Kayla knew would not make her happy. She dialed.
"Hello?..It’s Kayla"
From the other room Ike listened intently for what seemed like a long time before she spoke again.
"I think I understand, it’s all for the best I guess." To Ike her voice sounded robotic and unnatural, nothing like the voice that laughed with him at Keryn and Taylor sleeping together in Keryns room. He then heard her murmur a few more words before saying goodbye.
"Goodbye Dan, Bye." The phone clicked.
Ike stayed stuck to the couch, still listening. He couldn’t heard anything, until a small sniff escaped from the hall. He had to make sure she was okay.
Kayla stood, shaking. She was trying to control herself and then Ike appeared. She didn’t say anything, nor did he but somehow they found themselves hugging. And as Kayla’s tears seeped into Ike’s shirt he wondered what the hell thins "Dan" has said to cause such an explosion of grief.
